Diabetes: Sugar May Not Be The Sole Culprit

We cannot avoid pointing an accusing finger at sugar every time the issue of diabetes crops up.

If we could curse the white (sometimes brown) stuff, we would have done so. In fact, there are some people who go to the extreme of calling sugar a white poison.

But this may be unfair.

If sugar could talk back and defend itself from the accusation, it would have said, “Why only me? Just because I’m sweet, you automatically heap all the blame on me whenever a person contracts diabetes?”

We cannot blame people who pick out sugar as the main cause of diabetes.

In an article that saw print on www.verywellhealth.com, it said, “In ancient times, doctors would test for diabetes by tasting urine to see if it was sweet. People who tasted urine to check for diabetes were called “water tasters.” Other diagnostic measures included checking to see if urine attracted ants or flies.”

The article further stated: Diabetes is a Greek word that means “to pass through.” It was observed that urine quickly passed through patients with diabetes. The word mellitus is from Latin and means “sweet like honey.”

“Dr. Thomas Willis (1621-1675) called diabetes the ‘pissing evil’ and described the urine of people with type 2 diabetes as ‘wonderfully sweet, as if it was imbued with honey or sugar.’ He was also the first to describe pain and stinging from nerve damage due to diabetes.”

Sugar as the Cause of Diabetes is Falsehood

It’s pretty clear that sugar has become a victim of stereotyping.

But Diabetes UK comes to its rescue. The group says:

There are two main types of diabetes – Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.

In Type 1 diabetes, the insulin producing cells in your pancreas are destroyed by your immune system. No amount of sugar in your diet – or anything in your lifestyle – has caused or can cause you to get Type 1 diabetes.

With Type 2 diabetes, though we know sugar doesn’t directly cause Type 2 diabetes, you are more likely to get it if you are overweight. You gain weight when you take in more calories than your body needs, and sugary foods and drinks contain a lot of calories.

Another website, Parent Magazine, agrees with Diabetes UK: While type 2 is typically related to being overweight, sugar has no greater impact on glucose levels in the blood than other types of carbohydrates like rice and potatoes.
