Seven Key Ways to Prevent Falls in the Home

Falls are a prevalent issue for the elderly and in honor of it being Fall Awareness week, our team at Attentive Care Inc. want to make sure that you have the proper information to ensure that you or your loved ones are safe.

There are many factors that are attributed to falls such as poor vision, heart or health problems, and medication that makes you sleepy or tired. Falls with or without injury also can affect other aspects of life. Due to the increased fear of falling, there is a growing number of older adults that limit their activity levels and amounts of social activity in order to “stay safe”. This can lead to feelings of helplessness, physical decline, and depression. Luckily, although falls are the leading cause of injury among older adults, they are both predictable and preventable.

Ways to Prevent Falls

  • Clean up clutter around the home. This is important especially in areas that are more prone to injuries such as hallways and staircases.
  • Make sure that there is adequate lighting at all times. Adding night lights in the bedrooms and bathrooms make it easier to navigate and avoid tripping over unseen objects.
  • Use non-slip mats. Bathrooms and floors can become hazardous when wet so to prevent falls on slick surfaces, the use of non-slip mats help to reduce the chance of falling.
  • Reduce the need to take multiple trips up and down the stairs. Keeping most of your belongings and necessities on one level in your home can help tremendously because even with the help of guard rails, stairs are a significant falling hazard.
  • Stay active. Gentle exercise such as walking and yoga help to improve strength, balance, coordination, and flexibility so your joints will be able to support your body much more effectively.
  • Move cautiously. Abrupt movements such as suddenly getting up can make your blood pressure drop and make you feel dizzy and wobbly.
  • Wear supportive shoes. Low-heeled or lace-up shoes are preferred as they are able to fully support your feet unlike socks or smooth-soled shoes and slippers that may actually increase your risk of falling. Make sure to discuss fall prevention with your doctors as they will be able to assess your medical conditions and can give you additional support to help put a stop to preventable falls.
